Enlisted 45th Massachusetts Volumes, 1862. Mustered out of service July 1863. Served in the United States Christian Commission winter of 1864.
Began business life May 1866, firm of Smith & Porter, and built up exclusive specialty as manufacturers light locomotives. Firm was Porter, Bell & Company, 1871-1878, H.K. Porter & Company, 1879-1899. Incorporated, 1899, as H. K. Porter Company, of which became president.
Member 58th Congress (1903-1905), 31st Pennsylvania District. Member International Committee Young Men’s Christian Association, since 1875. Member board fellows Brown U., since 1899.
