Entered Harvard, 1851, but did not complete course (honorary Master of Arts, Harvard University, 1882. Doctor of Laws, Yale University, 1901. Doctor of Laws, Williams College, 1912).

Career

Employe in counting-house of S. & E. Austin, Boston. Then went to Vienna; studied music. Served in the United States Volunteers in Civil War, becoming major and brevetted lieutenant colonel, 1st Massachusetts Cavalry.

Severely wounded at Aldie, Virginia, June 1863.
