Private Company K, 1st New York Lincoln Cavalry, August 12, 1861 (company recruited in Grand Rapids and joined New York regiment in field). Discharged as regimental quartermaster sergeant, December 31, 1862, to become Second lieutenant Company Doctorate, 7th Michigan Cavalry. Later joined 25th New York Cavalry.
While serving as First lieutenant in commanded of company in front of Washington, lost left arm, July 11, 1864.
Honorary discharged, July 1865. Engaged in insurance business.
Appointed United States assessor internal revenue, Monmouth County, New Jersey, 1866. Admitted to practice as attorney, 1873, counsellor, 1876.
Practiced at Freehold, 1873-1875, then at Red Bank, New Jersey.
Member New Jersey Senate, 1888, 1889, 1890 (president 1890). Judge Circuit Court, Hudson County District, 1896-1903. Prosecuting attorney Monmouth County, 1904-1908, resigned.
