Attended school 3 months in year, and studied nights while working days on his father’s farm. Licensed to exhort at 18, and later to preach in Methodist Episcopal Church. Joined Erie Conference at 26.
Filled pastorates at Hartford and Braceville, O. Attended Methodist Theological School, Concord, New Hampshire (U.S.), 1853-1856.
Resumed ministry, 1856-1865, filling pastorates at Watertown, Lowell, Fitchburg and Medford, Massachusetts.
Then took supernumerary relation. Became lumberman at Au Sable, Michigan, where he established an extensive business, of which he was the head for over 30 years, until 1898.
Has been mayor of Au Sable. Was president Bay View Assembly, where he built Loud Hall. Was trustee Albion College.
Endowed there a chair in history.
Also endowed a lectureship with the Wesleyan Guild at Ann Arbor, for the students of Michigan University Was largely interested in fruit raising in Southern California. Retired, 1898. Home: Au Sable, Michigan
