Duffield, Henry Martyn was born on May 15, 1842 in Detroit, Michigan, United States. Son of Review George and Isabella Graham (Bethune) Duffield.

Father of Pitts D. Enlisted as private 9th Michigan Infantry, August, 1861. First lieutenant and adjunct, October 12, 1861-October 14, 1864. Assistant adjunct-general 23d Brigade, Army of the Cumberland, 1862.
Post adjunct, Chattanooga, 1863. Assistant and acting provost marshal general Army of the Cumberland. Admitted to bar, 1865.
Became senior member H. M. & D. B. Duffield. City counsellor, 1881-1887. Brig. general vols., May 27, 1898.
Honorary discharge, November 30, 1898. Umpire German-Venezuelan Arbitration Commission, 1903. Commander in chief Naval and Military Order of Spanish-American War, 1910-1911.
