Taught school several years. Admitted to bar, Binghamton, New York, 1856. Practiced in Illinois, 1858-1861, when he removed to Colorado, and resumed practice of law.
Major general Colorado militia, 1862-1864. United States senator from December 4, 1876, until April 17, 1882. Secretary of the interior in cabinet of President Arthur, April 1882-March 1885.
Again United States senator from Colorado 4 terms, 1885-1909. Reëlected, 1891, as Republican, but withdrew from Republican National Convention, 1896, because of financial plank in platform. Reëlected, 1897, as Independent Silver Republican.
