Stokes, Henry Newlin was born on October 24, 1859 in Moorestown, New Jersey, United States. Son of Doctor John H. and Tabitha (Jenkins) Stokes.

Education

Bachelor of Science, Haverford College, 1878. Doctor of Philisophy, Johns Hopkins, 1884. University of Munich and Federal Polytechnic, Zurich, Switzerland, 1884-1889.

Career

Chemist United States Geological Survey, 1889-1892 and 1894-1903. Assistant professor inorganic chemistry, University of Chicago, 1892-1893. Associate chemist, Bureau of Standards, 1903-1909.

Retired from chemical work, 1909. Founded The O.E. Library League and edits its organ, The O.E. Library Critic, in behalf of prison reform and aid to prisoners.
