FORBES, Henry Ogrg was born on January 30, 1851. 2nd son of Reverend Alexander Forbes, Master of Arts, Drumblade, Aberdeenshire, and Mary, daughter of Henry Ogg, Strathdee, Aberdeen.
He was educated at Aberdeen Grammar School, the University of Aberdeen and the University of Edinburgh.
Assistant to Professor National Ilist., Aberdeen, during undergraduate medical course. Compelled by loss of eye (the result of accident) to abandon medicine. Travelled in Portugal, making biological and geological investigations, 1875-1877.
Engaged in exploration in Keeling Islands, Java, Sumatra, and, accompanied by Mistress
Forbes, in Banda, Amboina, Timor-laut, Burn, and Timor, where made large collections and numerous observations on ethnology, biology, and geography of these islands, 1878-1884. Elected As. Linn. Society, 1879.
Under auspices of R.G.S., British Assistant, and Colonial Office, led expedition to explore Mount Owen Stanley, New Guinea, 1885-1886.
