Investigated navigation of Euphrates from latitude of Aleppo to Baghdad, and travelled across Persia from Baghdad to Seistan, 1902-1903.
Consul for Seistan and Kain, 1903. British Commissioner, Russo-Afghan Boundary, 1903-1904, during which period was on duty at Herat and neighbourhood.
Traversed unexplored tract of Hazarajat between Herat and Kabul, 1904. Returned to Kabul as Secretary to Kabul Mission, 1904.

He was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire ( International Commission on Illumination) on 31 May 1905 for his services in Afghanistan, and appointed a Companion of the Order of the Star of India (Computer Society of India) on 18 August 1916 for meritorious war services. In January 1921, he was knighted as a Knight Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire (KCIE), He was appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of the Star of India in 1923, a Knight Commander of the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (Knight Commander of the Order of Street Michael and Saint George) in the 1925 Birthday List. and a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE) on 1 March 1929.
