(PREFACE TIIE Apostles Creed is mainly a plain statement o...)
PREFACE TIIE Apostles Creed is mainly a plain statement of matters of fact yet, as a formula of belief, it appeals, of course, not to the critical and calculative understanding which is used in the discussion or the examination of historical evidence, but to the spiritual and apprehensive faculties, which lay hold of eternal verities. It does so because the belief which it asks for is not the mere belief that the facts occurred. Such a belief would be quite possible, without anything that could be called, faith. What it asks for, as , faith, is the committal of the self to these X PREFA CE. facts as to spiritual acts, in which the eternal Love and Will of God have entered upon the scene of our human story, and have taken definite action therein. To these acts God stands committed. And to these acts He asks man to commit himself-to commit himself in his entire being, so that he may pass under their power and pressure, and accept all their consequences, and yield himself to that which God, in them, sets moving. So surrendering himself, he brings to bear upon himself the full force of those energies which the Eternal Love has evoked on his behalf. This self-surrender to the power of the Divine action is faith, and it is, therefore, an affair of the will, of love, of the spirit of dedication. No examination of historical evidence can produce it, or justify it, or explain it. All such discussion is below the mark it cannot touch the secret springs it cannot reach home to the vital matter. This is why, in things of faith, a weariness, an insufficiency, belongs to all apologetic handling of historical evidence. And, indeed, the believer cannot enter on such a discussion without a sincere and profound sense of apology for having to force into the foreground matter so inadequate. Yet his spiritual surrender of himself involves the facts being there faith rests absolutely on the assumption that Gods Love has, as a fact, taken this action on his behalf. And, if this assumption is questioned, he is obliged to see to its justification...

Jenny Lind (1820-87) was one of Europe's most famous opera singers. Known as the 'Swedish Nightingale', she first rose to prominence in an 1838 performance of Weber's Freischütz. Despite her immense success over the next ten years, she retired from the stage at the age of twenty-nine. Seeking financial security to pursue her charitable interests, in 1850 she accepted the invitation of impresario P. T. Barnum to undertake a tour of the United States; this was another succession of triumphs. Henry Scott Holland (1847-1918), the theologian and social reformer, and music writer William Smith Rockstro (1823-95) used Lind's own documents, letters and diaries as the basis of this two-volume memoir, published in 1891, which focuses on the first thirty-one years of her life. Volume 1 covers Lind's Swedish childhood and early singing career, and a brief but critical period when she suffered damage to her vocal cords.

(Excerpt from Jenny Lind the Artist, 1820-1851: A Memoir o...)
Excerpt from Jenny Lind the Artist, 1820-1851: A Memoir of Madame Jenny Lind Goldschmidt, Her Art-Life and Dramatic Career, From Original Documents, Letters, Ms. Diaries, &C., Collected by Mr. Otto Goldschmidt The welcome which was given to the Memoir of Jenny Lind in the original edition of two volumes has encouraged us to offer it in a smaller and less expensive form. In its first form it was essential that it should aim at completeness and thoroughness of treatment. It had to omit nothing that might legitimately be asked for, by those to whom her memory was dear in Sweden, and in Germany, no less than in England. It had to satisfy the attention and the interest of musical experts, to whom her career was a record of artistic perfection. To do this, it could not but be lengthy, detailed, and somewhat expensive. But, after all this has been done, there remains a larger English public, to whom she had become a name rather than a positive memory; who had never heard her sing: but yet to whom her life could not but appeal with the irresistible force that belongs to genius whenever it is allied with simplicity, candour, purity, and courage. To them, her story would speak home, if only they had the opportunity of reading it. We have, therefore, ventured on the task of reducing the memoir to one volume, by vigorous curtailments, and by omission of much technical matter. Balfe made her a speech, thanking her in the name of the troupe, and paid her some lofty, but heartfelt compliments, in neat and appropriate phraseology. The evening was very delightful altogether, and we all parted with regret, returning to London on the morrow with Mr. Lumley." This generous and graceful act accomplished, Mdlle. Lind returned for ten days, to London, for the purpose of carrying out the great enterprise which, during the last few months, had occupied so much of her attention, and which she now felt sure of bringing to a successful issue. CHAPTER VII. "ELIJAH." The noble idea of commemorating Mendelssohn's genius, by the foundation of a Music-School in his name, presented itself to some of his most intimate friends, not very many months after his early death. The exact details of its origin have not transpired. In all probability, it first assumed consistency in the form of an unpremeditated remark, made during the course of some desultory conversation; but, whether by Mdlle. Lind or Herr Klingemann in London, or in Leipzig by Herr Ferdinand David or Herr Schleinitz, has never been clearly ascertained. It is certain, however, that the thought of using Elijah as the medium for the collection of so large a sum of money as was necessary for the realisation of the project originated with Mdlle. Lind; and, this idea once broached, the four friends we have named, together with Sir George Smart, Mr. (afterwards Sir Julius) Benedict, Dr. Hullah, Mr. Buxton (the then proprietor of the publishing firm of Ewer & Co.), and some other zealous fellow-workers, warmly espoused the cause, and gave themselves no rest until they had brought it to a successful issue. We have seen that Mdlle. Lind first mention...

(Excerpt from Memoir of Madame Jenny Lind-Goldschmidt, Vol...)
Excerpt from Memoir of Madame Jenny Lind-Goldschmidt, Vol. 1 of 2: Her Early Art-Life and Dramatic Career, 1820-1851 The following memoir tells its own tale, and requires no further explanation. The justification that we offer for the date at which it closes is given in the body of the book. Nothing therefore remains for the Preface to deal with beyond a few matters, chiefly personal, upon which it may be well to say a word. It will be seen from the title-page that the whole of the materials used in these two volumes have been procured, and sifted, and sanctioned by the one who alone could act with complete, intimate, and legitimate authority. Everything possible has been done under this competent and exact scrutiny to secure that the memoir should be trustworthy and authentic; and, for further warrant, the sources whence the materials have been drawn have been continually recorded in the Notes. For the use made of the materials thus industriously collected, the two authors are solely responsible; and this general responsibility they have shared in common, so far as was practicable. Put, within that common responsibility, each has undertaken separate sections of the work, so that to the one has fallen the story of Madame Goldschmidt's life so far as it belonged to Sweden, together with that part of it which followed her farewell to the stage: while the other has taken in hand the whole of her dramatic and musical career in its European development. Excerpt from Memoir of Madame Jenny Lind-Goldschmidt, Vol. 2 of 2: Her Early Art-Life and Dramatic Career, 1820-1851 In accordance with the pre-arranged plan confided to Madame Wichmann, in her letter of the 1st of August, 1846, Mdlle. Lind proceeded from Darmstadt to Munich, where, between the 23rd of October, and the 8th of November, she sang twice, in La Sonnambula; once, in Norma; once, in Der Freischütz; and twice, in La Figlia del Reggimento; besides taking part, on the 1st of November, in a Concert given for the benefit of the Orchestra. Before leaving Frankfort, she had sent the following account of her probable movements to Madame Birch-Pfeiffer: - "Frankfort-on-the-Maine, Oct. 6, 1846. "To-day, I am twenty-six years old! dear Mother Birch! that is no joke; and therefore it is that I feel such a desire to write to you to-day, and to thank you heartily for your last letter.
