Governor Mississippi, 1851-1854.
Member lower house Confederate Congress, 1861-1865, became Confederate official in spite of Unionist sympathies, resigned after Davis refused to accept President Lincoln’s peace proposals. After brief imprisonment crossed Union lines, tried unsuccessfully to discuss peace terms with Lincoln and Secretary Seward, then sailed for Europe.
