Served South African War, 1879. Zulu Campaign; attached to Cavalry Brigade in advance on Ulundi. Present at battle (severely wounded, medal with clasp).

Field Adjutant Bechuanaland Field Force, Lanberg Campaign, 1896-1897 (despatches several times). Lieutenant-Colonel 1900.
Commanded artillery, Wepener siege, 1900. Foreign some time commanded column of mounted troops, Cape Colony.
Commanded 1st Colonial Division, Cape Colony, 1901 (despatches thrice, Queen's medal, four clasps, King’s medal, two clasps, Companion of the Distinguished Service Order).
Decorated for gallantry on Boer laager. Colonel Commanding Cape Mounted Riflemen, and Commandant-General Cape Colonial Forces.
