Onderdonk, Henry Ustick was born on March 16, 1789 in New York City. Son of Doctor John and Deborah (Ustick) Onderdonk.

Education

Graduate Columbia, 1805, S.T.D. (honorary), 1827. Doctor of Medicine, University Edinburgh (Scotland).

Career

Associate editor New York Medical Magazine, 1814-1815. Ordained priest Protestant Episcopal Church in Trinity Church, New York City, 1815. Elected rector St. Ann’s Church, Brooklyn, 1820.

Elected assistant bishop Pennsylvania. Became 2d bishop Pennsylvania, 1836, resigned jurisdiction after confessing habitual use intoxicating liquor, 1844, suspended by House of Bishops from all offices of the ministry. Restored to Active ministry by House of Bishops, 1856.

An outstanding theological scholar of his day. Author: Episcopacy Listed by Scriptures, 1830. Episcopacy Examined and Re-examined, 1835.
