He was drafted by the Boston Yanks in the twelfth round of the 1945 NFL Draft. He played college football at the University of Notre Dame and attended Chester High School in Chester, West Virginia. Coleman was captain of his high school football and basketball teams at Chester High School.
Coleman played for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
He earned United Press International Second Team All-American honors in 1943. Coleman was selected by the Boston Yanks with the 113th pick in the 1943 NFL Draft.
