Orvis played college football at the University of Colorado. Orvis was a 1971 All-American and twice earned first-team All-Big Eight honors. He was named to the 1970s All-Big Eight Decade team
In 1971, University of Colorado finished ranked #3 in national polls.
Orvis was drafted in the first round of the 1972 NFL Draft by the Lions. Orvis was chosen to be inducted into the College Football Hall Of Fame on January 8, 2016.
