Baus managed Richard Nixon's successful senatorial victory in 1960, and later advised Nixon to resign when the Watergate scandal became public knowledge. Baus did work in journalism and public relations. He created a political campaign firm after World War II and provided services such as consultation, polling, and direct mail. Baus retired from the firm in 1968 but continued to offer services as a consultant. The author had an eclectic range of interests that made their way into his writing, including crossword puzzles, dictionary work, and restaurants.
Baus died of Parkinson's disease on May 6, 1999 in Palm Springs.
