The Knight"s Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. Herbert Broennle was killed on 4 July 1943 when he was shot down and crashed north of Lake Lentini in Italy. He was credited with 58 victories in 387 missions.
