He was born in Saint Ann"s Bay, Jamaica, the son of William Alexander Duffus, Justice of the Peace, and educated at Cornwall College, Jamaica.
He served as Resident Magistrate, Jamaica from 1946 to 1958, a Puisne Judge from 1958 to 1962, a Judge of Appeal from 1962 to 1964 and President of the Court of Appeal from 1964 to 1967. He was then appointed Chief Justice of Jamaica in 1968, serving in that capacity until 1973. He was acting Governor-General of Jamaica from 2 March to 27 June 1973.
He was knighted in 1966.
