From the Ascension morning, when the little band of disciples, widowed of their Master, turned their feet from the spot whence He had faded from their sight, up to the day when the great convert wrote these words to the men of Corinth, there had been one sweet solace in their bitter cup of sorrow--the thought that soon He would come again to reign with them in power. It was an illusion of faith. They misunderstood the Master's dying word as they had mistaken His life-mission. When Peter left his boat and Levi his usury, when Nathanael forsook the fig-tree shade for Him who knew not where to lay His head, it was with the persuasion that the net and office-stool were soon to be exchanged for thrones on the right hand and the left of a PatriotKing. Not even Gethsemane or Calvary, though it shattered their faith and despoiled their ambition, could suffice to change the nature of their views about their Master. It simply shifted their standpoint. They had hoped for a Monarch of an independent people. That Monarch had died a felon's death on a tree. Ah! then, they thought, this was part of the Divine programme. The sun of the Eesurrection morning had cleft through the darkness of the day of Crucifixion. He would come again, and that soon, with ten thousands of angels. He would take great power to Himself and would reign; and His companions of His lifetime here on earth, who had left all and followed Him, what would they have therefore? They would sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. He had said it. Who should gainsay it? And even Paul shared the same delusion.
