Herbert L. Holtz is an American lawyer based in Boston, Massachusetts. He practiced as a partner at the Boston firm Holtz & Reed, LLP, and later became executive vice president and general counsel of Steward Health Care, a New England healthcare system.
Education
Holtz earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Connecticut College in 1983 and a Juris Doctor degree from Boston College Law School in 1989. Connecticut College was founded in 1911 as Connecticut College for Women in New London, Connecticut, in response to Wesleyan University's decision in 1909 to stop admitting women. The college became coeducational in 1969, so it had admitted men for about fourteen years when Holtz graduated.
Boston College Law School was formally organized in 1929, although provisions for a law school had appeared in Boston College's charter of 1863. Before then, promising Boston College graduates who wanted a legal education were encouraged to attend Harvard Law School. The school opened on September 26, 1929, in the Lawyer's Building on Beacon Street in Boston, received American Bar Association accreditation in 1932, and moved to its present Newton campus in 1975.
Holtz was admitted to the Massachusetts bar in the same year he completed his law degree.
Career
Holtz's documented career has been based in Boston and centers on legal practice. He was a partner at Holtz & Reed, LLP, a Boston law firm whose listed practice areas include administrative law, business and commercial law, and employment law. He spent nearly fifteen years as a partner there, serving as outside counsel for Boston's major academic medical centers, including the Harvard teaching hospitals and Massachusetts General Hospital. Academic medical centers combine hospital care with medical education and research, so this work placed him in the legal affairs of institutions that were central to the region's health care system.
Holtz later joined Steward Health Care, where he became executive vice president and general counsel in October 2018. Steward is described as the second largest healthcare system in New England. His legal experience in that role spanned health care, intellectual property, and employment law.
Membership
Holtz was admitted to the Massachusetts bar in 1989. Admission to a state bar authorizes a lawyer to practice law in that state's courts, and membership in the Massachusetts bar marked the start of his licensed legal practice in Massachusetts.
