About the Book In many books the Middle East is referred to as Home to the Cradle of Civilization, and many of the world's oldest cultures and civilizations. Egyptian civilization began around 3150 BC with the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt under the pharaohs. Mesopotamia was home to the Assyrian Empires of 1365–1076 BC and the Neo-Assyrian Empire of 911–609 BC. From the early 7th century BC, the Iranian Medes followed by Achaemenid Persia and other subsequent Iranian states empires, dominated the region. In the 1st century BC, the expanding Roman Republic absorbed the whole Eastern Mediterranean. Between the 3rd and 7th centuries AD, the Middle East was dominated by the Byzantine Empire and Sassanid Persia. From the 7th century, the power of Islam rose in the Middle East, and Arab dominance came to an end in the mid-11th century with the arrival of the Seljuq Turks. During the early 13th century the Mongol Empire, mainly Turkic, invaded. By the early 15th century the Ottoman emirs became a new power, linguistically Turkic and religiously Islamic. In 1453 they captured the Christian Byzantine capital of Constantinople and became sultans. The Middle East became a battleground between Ottomans and Iranian Safavids for centuries. Then the British established control of the Persian Gulf, the French encroached into Lebanon and Syria, and in 1912 the Italians seized Libya and the Dodecanese islands. During the 1920s to 1940s, Syria and Egypt moved towards independence, and the British, the French, and the Soviets departed from much of the Middle East during and after World War 2. The Arab-Jewish struggle in Palestine culminated in war in the late 1940s, and independence for the new state of Israel. Since that time the Middle East has been a hotbed of instability. Weissbach has been working on some very satisfactory photographs, recently come into his possession, of the Grave of Darius at nak's-i-rustam. He has been enabled to correct many readings in the upper inscription (n Ra), as well as to discover quite a number of somewhat isolated words occur ring in the mutilated lower inscription (nrb). In addition to this he reads with certainty several superscriptions over the heads of the National Types of the Empire. All this material Professor Weissbach has kindly placed at my disposal. In a personal letter he has given me the list of his nrb readings, and has forwarded in Reindrucl'en, Correctumbzug, Qtfld Fab nenabzug advance pages of his excellent work, Keilz'nsc/ififlen der Ackz'imeniden, which furnishes a synaptic trilingual text, and includes also all the purely Babylonian inscriptions of this dynasty. The volume will be issued within the next few months, probably long before the undersigned has corrected the final proof of the present book. The first time I came in sight of the Troad, I felt as if the whole panorama of the Homeric wars had been suddenly spread out before me. This, I am sure, has been the experience of all visitors to the Trojan plain. A bout four miles off the mainland is Tenedos. Farther to the west is I mbros, while high above it, clear and distinct on the horizon, is the great Saoke of Samothrace. On the north, the Hellespont resembles a large river with steep banks, where the Thracian Chersonesus meets the eye. On its southern shore, between Sigeum (marked to-day by the unattractive houses of the village of Yeni Shehr) and the mound In Tepeh indicating where the high and rocky Rhoetean shore began was the position of the Greek fleet. The coast along the Aegean consists of a line of foot-hills, while the eastern boundary of the plain is formed by the spurs of the Ida chain. Between these ranges, in a spot especially favored by nature, sheltered as it is by hills and sea, is the valley of the Scamander (modern Mendere), fertile and rich-soiled, where to-day is still to be recognized much of the Homeric flora. The present course of the river is toward the northwest corner of the plain, but in ancient times it probably flowed close beside the Ida range, and, meeting the Simois at the swamp of the modern Dumbrek Su, emptied by what is now a dead arm of the sea (I n Tepeh A smak) into the Hellespont. (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) About the Book The history of Christianity concerns the Christian religion, with its various denominations, from the life of Jesus Christ in the 1st century to the present. Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Christianity spread to all of Europe in the Middle Ages, and since the Renaissance, has expanded throughout the world and become the world's largest religion (with over 2 billion faithful). At first persecuted, but later embraced by the Roman Empire, the East-West Schism, or Great Schism of 1054, separated the Church into Western (Latin) and Eastern (Greek) branches, i.e., Western Catholicism (based on Rome) and Eastern Orthodoxy (based on Constantinople). The rise of Islam resulted in a number of Crusades fought by Christian Armies from Europe, whose aim was to re-capture and hold Jerusalem. In 1453, Constantinople fell to the Ottoman Empire, and Christianity was almost completely removed from the territory that now comprises Turkey. The three most important traditions that emerged from the Protestant Reformation (1521-1610) were the Lutheran, Reformed (Calvinist, Presbyterian, etc.), and Anglican traditions. Herbert was born on November 4, 1865 at South Scituate (later Norwell), Massachussets. He was the son of James Turner Tolman and Mary Thomas (Briggs) Tolman. The earliest of the Tolman family in America was Thomas Tolman who came from England before 1640 and settled at Dorchester, Massachussets.
Of Tolman's mother's line in America the first was Walter Briggs who settled in Scituate, Massachussets, in 1643.
Tolman attended grammar school in Hanover, to which the family removed when he was a boy, and high school at Rockland, Massachussets In 1884 he entered Yale University. There he distinguished himself in Greek, Latin, and Sanskrit, and in 1888 received the degree of B. A. with high honors. In 1890 he received the degree of Ph. D. at Yale and became assistant to Prof. William Dwight Whitney.
Numerous honorary degrees were conferred upon him. He studied at the University of Berlin in 1896, at the University of Munich in 1905.
He was instructor in Latin (1891 - 92) and assistant-professor of Sanskrit (1892 - 93) at the University of Wisconsin; professor of Greek and Sanskrit (1893 - 94) at the University of North Carolina; and professor of Greek at Vanderbilt University (1894 - 1923). In 1895 in Milwaukee he was ordained deacon and priest.
During his last ten years at Vanderbilt he served as dean of the College of Arts and Science. He also taught for many years in the summer sessions of the George Peabody College.
During his years of teaching and administrative duties he was remarkably active in productive scholarship. He published Eight Books of Cesar's Gallic War (1891), with W. R. Harper; A Grammar of the Old Persian Language (1892); The Gospel of Matthew in Greek (1892), with Alexander Kerr; A Guide to the Old Persian Inscriptions (1893); Greek and Roman Mythology (1897), with K. P. Harrington, based on Hermann Steuding's Griechische und R"mische Mythologie; Herodotus and the Empires of the East (1899), with J. H. Stevenson; The Art of Translating (1901); Mycenaean Troy (1903), with G. C. Scoggin; Ancient Persian Lexicon and the Texts of the Archaemenidan Inscriptions Transliterated (1908); and a Cuneiform Supplement (1910) to the latter. To Tolman should be assigned also the Vanderbilt Oriental Series of nine volumes, for, aside from his own contributions, the whole series found its inspiration in him.
In 1912 he was lecturer for the Archaeological Institute of America. He was associate editor of The World's Progress (10 vols. , 1911). He was a frequent contributor to such periodicals as the American Journal of Philology, the Journal of the American Oriental Society, and the American Journal of Archaeology. The wide recognition of his scholarship was attested by his being invited to contribute to the Madressa jubilee volume published in Bombay in 1914, for which he wrote "The Grave of King Darius at Naksh-i-Rustam. "
In addition to his work in ancient languages, Tolman published three books on religious themes: Urbs Beata (1902), "Via Crucis" (1907), and Christi Imago (1915). The last of these consisted of articles written for the Living Church, of which he was devotional editor in 1914-15.
While never rector, he served frequently in the pulpit and had temporary charge of churches both in the United States and abroad. From 1904 he was an honorary canon of All Saints' Cathedral, Milwaukee.
He died on November 24, 1923.

Though reared a Congregationalist, he became a member of the Protestant Episcopal Church and studied theology while at the University of Wisconsin.
Tolman was distinguished for the diversity of his gifts; he was described after his death as "a scholar of rare attainments, a teacher by instinct and by training, an administrator of courage and courtesy, a preacher of eloquence and power. "
On August 26, 1891, he married Mary Belden Wells, who with an adopted daughter survived him.
