Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree was one of the great figures of the English theatre, who became the most successful actor-manager of his time.
Background
Herbert was born in London, United Kingdom, on the 17th of December 1853.
He was the son of Julius Beerbohm, a London merchant of German parentage; his half-brother, Max Beerbohm, became well known as a dramatic critic, a miscellaneous writer and caricaturist.
Career
Sir Herbert Beerbohm was an English theater actor. He made his debut in London in 1876, soon finding success on the stage in the early 1880s. In 1887 he became the manager of the Haymarket Theatre, which he ran and starred in productions in for ten years. In 1897 he built and moved to 'Her Majesty's Theatre, ' where he produced a variety of pieces ranging from poetic drama to lighter, children's plays. He was known for his stage productions of Charles Dickens and Shakespeare classics. He was knighted in 1909.
Achievements
By 1887, he was managing the Haymarket Theatre, winning praise for adventurous programming and lavish productions, and starring in many of its productions.
In 1904 he founded the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
He was knighted in 1909.
