(This is an old-fashioned love story, with a mid-20th cent...)
This is an old-fashioned love story, with a mid-20th century setting in the windswept farming and fishing villages of the west of Ireland --- familiar country to the veteran author, poet, and critic Herbert A. Kenny. It tells of the love of a young couple: Paddy Madigan, heir to a family farm but yoked to a widowed mother driven by greed and a bitter hatred of the church; and Jane Ward, daughter of an abusive tinker father who sends her to beg in the streets. Paddy and Jane's struggle to make a life of their own together, apart from their families' woes, culminates in a dramatic scene at an abandoned stone fort, followed by a flight to penance on a lonely island redoubt. Working against the clock to save the young lovers in their new life is an unlikely pair, who are in agreement about their aim, but not always about the best means: Father Daniel Curtin, the insightful parish priest, and Dr. Olive O'Brien, the local doctor who has been too busy with her medical practice to find a family life for herself. Will their devotion to Jane and Paddy be rewarded in time?
