Historical Hakotdate is a fact-filled volume giving foreigner's views of the city in the latter half of the nineteenth centure. It begins by setting the stage, describing the rich history of the area, the coming of the early Japanese settlers, and the appearance of the first foreigners. It goes on to describe the opening of the port to Western nations--mainly achieved through the efforts of the American Perry and the Russian Putiatin--and portrays for us the lives of some of the early consuls and missionaries sent to work in the city.
