Brees, Herbert Jay was born on June 12, 1877 in Laramie, Wyoming, United States. Son of Daniel Hickey and Cora (Andrews) Brees.


Bachelor of Science, University of Wyoming, 1897, Doctor of Laws, 1939. Honor graduate United States Infantry and Cavalry School, 1903, Staff College, 1905, Army War College, 1907.


Commissioned Second lieutenant, United States Army, May 23, 1898. Advanced through grades to colonel, July 1, 1920. Brigadier general, November 1, 1930.

Major general, May 2, 1936. Lieutenant general, October 1, 1940. Retired June 30, 1941.

President National Bank of Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas, since July 1, 1941. Participated in Spanish-American War, Philippine Insurrection, Mexican Border, World War in Vosges Sector, St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne and Ypres-Lys campaigns. Chief of staff, 91st div., September 1917-October 1918, 7th Army Corps, 1918-June 1919.
