Studied at private school. His Majesty’s Ship “ Britannia.” Joined Royal Navy, 1875.
Lieutenant, 1882; Captain, 1900. Served in H. M. South. “ Sultan” at bombardment of Alexandria, and Egyptian War, 18S2 (Egyptian Avar medal, clasp, and bronze star). In command of His Majesty’s Ship “Magpie,” served in expedition against Mandingoes in the Gambia, 1894.
Acted as Chief of Staff to Admiral Bedford, Commander-in-Chief (medal, clasp, and Companion of the Distinguished Service Order).
