Since no American medical school now requires a knowledge of Latin or Greek of its applicants for admission, students are faced with the necessity of learning a large vocabulary without much linguistic background. The words they must know are, of course, defined in medical dictionaries; but these are formidable volumes, useful mainly for reference. For many years the University of Wisconsin has offered a course in terminology for undergraduates who expect to enter medicine, which has resulted in a considerable saving of time in the crowded first years of medical school. This book is the fruit of the authors' experience in teaching that course, and is designed to present, in as brief and convenient a form as possible, the most common Greek and Latin words whose derivatives are important in the study of medicine.
