Served South Africa, 1899, 1900, 1901, and 1902 —once wounded. Served as Aide-de-camp to FieldMarshal Lord Roberts in South Africa, March 1900 to December 1900. Served with 3rd Battalion King’s Royal Rifles in Natal till Relief of Ladysmith.
Also with Mounted Infantry Battalion King’s Royal Rifles (despatches four times, Queen’s medal, 5 clasps, King’s medal, 2 clasps, Companion of the Distinguished Service Order,). Holds bronze medal of the Royal Humane Society. Companion of the Distinguished Service Order 1901; King’s Royal Rifle Corps; General Statf Officer, 3rd Grade.
