Hermann Breit was educated locally.
As a colonel commanding the 5th Pz Bde in France he won the RK on 3 June 1940. Breith took over the 3d Pz Div from Model on 22 Oct 1941, being promoted to Generalmajor and awarded the Oakleaves (69/890) the same day. On 30 Sep 1942 he left his division, was promoted the next day to Generalleutnant, and on 3 Jan 1943 took over the 3d Pz Corps. With several absences, Breith commanded this unit until the end, most of the time in south Russia. Several times his badly decimated forces had to be refitted.
Breith’s promotion to Gen of Pz Troops was dated I Mar 1943. He was awarded the Swords on 21 Feb 1944. The following November his formation was renamed Pz Gp Breith and attached to the 3d Hungarian Army for three months as it was driven into the Alps. He fought the rest of the war with the 6th Army. Breith died 3 Sep 1964.
