Corrodi was born in Frascati, Lazio, Italy, on July 23, 1844. However, in accordance with an alternate source, his birthplace was Zurich. He was brought up in an artistic family, as his father, Salomon Corrodi, was a painter. He was the brother of Arnold Corrodi.
Hermann Corrodi studied in the studio of Alexandre Calame in Geneva from 1860. In 1866 he entered the Accademia di San Luca, studying under his father, Salomon Corrodi. Corrodi then travelled throughout Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. He visited Egypt, Cyprus, Syria, Constantinopolis and Montenegro. In 1872 he began his studies in Paris.
Corrodi quite quickly built an international reputation as a genre and landscape painter. In 1872 he displayed his artworks at the Munich International Exhibition and travelled to London. There Corrodi received commissions for history paintings from the British royal family. He got acquainted with most of the European royalty of that time, including Queen Victoria.
Hermann Corrodi's constant trips provided the subject matter for many of his artworks. In 1873 the artist participated at the Vienna Universal Exhibition. From 1876 he started to spend his winters in Rome and summers in Baden-Baden, where the German nobility commissioned his paintings. Among his clients were Wilhelm II, a German Emperor, who acquired his Dôme du Rocher de Jerusalem.
Corrodi was very appreciated by the English Royal Court and exhibited frequently in London. In 1881 his work, Storm in the desert, Egypt, was displayed at The Royal Academy. He also exhibited his works in Rome, Vienna and Paris in the following years.
In addition to his career as an artist, he was a longtime professor at the Accademia di San Luca. He painted his numerous works in his studio in Rome, inspired by the sketches and studies he had collected during his numerous journeys in the Middle East and using many of the oriental artifacts he had brought back with him from these trips.
The style of his paintings was academic, while his paintings consisted mostly of orientalist landscapes, oriental streets and markets scenes. They were depicted in a combination with earthy and bright colours, very often with the Egyptian pyramids in the background.
Hermann Corrodi was an outstanding artist of his time. For his contribution to the world of art, he was titled as an Academic of Merit by the Academy of St Luke in 1893.
Among his most remarkable artworks were: Prayer at Dusk, Venice, Fetching Water at a Fountain, Processione A Sorrento, The Ambush, At the Water's Edge, Arab Carpet Merchants, Prayers at Dawn, etc.
Today, Corrodi's paintings can be found in the Frye Art Museum in Seattle, Washington; the National Museum of Qatar; the Dahesh Museum of Art in New York; and Museo di Roma in Trastevere.
