Gossen received a good education in high school, where he showed his mathematical ability in the study of their elementary mathematics
Gossen’s only known publication on economics was ignored by his contemporaries both because of the dominance of the views of the historical school and the pretentious presentation of his ideas. Thus, both Jevons and Walras were forced to recognise that their work on marginal utility had been substantially anticipated by Gossen. Indeed, Gossen’s exact anticipation of Jevons’ theory of labour supply is almost uncanny.
Gossen’s book is, in general, a working out of the hedonistic calculus using mathematical methods. Civil servant and businessman.
His work "Development of the laws of human intercourse and their resulting rules for human behavior" (1854), anticipated the theory of marginal utility as formulated by William Stanley Jevons and others
He formulated two laws, which in many ways anticipated the theoretical and mathematical constructions of Leon Walras, Jevons, William and other members of the mathematical school.
In honor of Gossen Union social policy since 1997 Gossen Prize is awarded.
