Career
It is not definitely known if he actually existed, although there are works which are attributed to him, such as nemuri-neko (sleeping cat) in the Toshogu Shrine in Nikko. He may have been a fictitious person invented by KabuJci playwrights and storytellers. In the Kabuki play and Tokiwazu (ballad sung with the accompaniment of the samisen), he is represented as the sculptor of a girl’s image which moved as if it were alive.
