Hidekata Kiyohara was once a private tutor to Emperors Goyozei and Gomino-o. Later he changed his name to Funabasm and became an adviser to Shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa along with Kan- shitsu and Shotai, both Buddhist priests. He firmly resented the intrusion of the doctrines of Seika Fujiwara and Kazan Ha-yashi into his school.
