After graduating from Keio University joined Shochiku Film Company as a director (1938) and has been with them ever since, Is one of the leading film directors of this country and was awarded a prize by the Ministry of Education for his direction of Jiro Osaragi's Kikyo (Home Coming) (1950). Another important film of his is Kimi-no Nowa, (What Is Your Name?) based on a radio play.
