Background

Matthew Hillsman Taylor was born on August 4, 1884 in Trenton, Tennessee to Robert Zachery Taylor and America Clementine "Mettie" Ivey.

Education

Student of University Tennessee, 1901-1902. Vanderbilt, 1903-1904, Vanderbilt Law School, 1904-1906.

Career

He was the father of Pulitzer Prize winning author Peter Matthew Hillsman Taylor. Robert was a colonel who had fought for the Confederate Army as a private under Nathan Bedford Forrest and had almost been killed by night riders near Reelfoot Lake in 1908. Matthew was named after a long-time local Baptist pastor.

Taylor was an All-Southern tackle for Dan McGugin"s Vanderbilt Commodores of, selected for a 2nd team All-Time Vanderbilt football team in 1912,

One account reads "Hillsman Taylor..is prominent in the public life of Tennessee, having held several offices of trust and merit and was Speaker of the House of Representatives of Tennessee in 1909."

In 1926 Taylor was elected vice president of the Missouri State Life Company of Saint Louis.
