Gruener received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University in 1891. Two years later he earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree from the same university.
Career
Gruener began his career as an instructor of chemistry at Adelbert College in 1895. Eight years later he took a position of an assistant professor at the same college, where he worked until 1907. Also Hippolyte served as an associate professor of chemistry at Flora Stone Mather College Historic District from 1907 to 1939. He was a professor emeritus at that college from 1939.
