Hiromoto no Ōe was born in 1148. The Oe family was famous for having produced many court officials and scholars during the Heian period.
Hiromoto began his career as an official in the service of the court, but in 1184 he was invited by Minamoto no Yoritomo to come to Kamakura and take up an important position in the new military government.
In 1221, when the struggle known as the Jokyu disturbance broke out between the court and the shogunate, Hiromoto once again worked for the welfare of the shogunate, helping it to strengthen its position and consolidate its control over the capital and further demonstrating his power and political acumen.
