Formerly studied Russian at Tokyo School of Foreign Languages, but in 1877, left to attend Tokyo Semmon Gakko (predecessor of Waseda University), and then in 1885, went to study in America.
Returning home from America MURAI joined the editorial staff of Hochi Shimbun, for which he wrote stories on family life which won him great popularity. In 1906, was appointed an adviser to Fujin Selcai (Women's World) magazine for which he wrote serials. During the Taisho Era 1912-26, began dabbling in medical experiments, going on fasts and living in caves as a primitive.
During the Taisho Era 1912-26, he became somewhat eccentric.
