Hisatora Kumagai was born on March 8, 1904 in Oita Prefecture, Japan.
In 1925, Hisatora Kumagai graduated from Oita Higher Commercial School.
After the graduation, Hisatora Kumagai joined NikKatsu Productions. In 1930, he became a director and produced "Passionate Poet Takuboku Ishikawa" (1936), for which he won public recognition. In 1937, he joined Toho Productions, but left it in 1941.
In the West, Setsuko Наrа is best known for her performances in Yasujiro Ozu's films Late Spring (1949) and Tokyo Story (1953), although she had already appeared in 67 films before working with Ozu.
