Hara visited China in 1881 and then studied at the Sapporo Agricultural School, where he studied also literature under the guidance of Shiken Morita.
Coming to Tokyo in 1890, Hara became a staff writer of the Hochi Shimbun. Became famous for his political novel which was serially published on the Hochi Shimbun in 1891). He was later connected with the Sendai Shimbun, Mancho-Ho and Asahi newspapers. In his last years, he was mentally deranged and lived in poverty.
