Excerpt from My Quest of the Arab Horse This book has not been written With any idea that it will add to literature. Indeed, my pri mary obj ect in going to the Syrian desert was not to see things and then over-describe them in a book; I had no use for souvenir Spoons or Turkish rugs. My purpose was but for one thing, and that was to obtain Arab mares and stallions of absolute purity of blood that I could trace as coming from the great Anezeh tribe of Bedouins. That was my fixed idea in undertaking the journey. I had been deeply interested in the Arab horse for many years before I really knew any thing about them. Then, When I thought I had begun to acquire some knowledge of the breed I found that I was not learning much. Information about them, obtainable in this country, was confusing; alleged authorities contradicted each other in every argument; the thing to do, it seemed to me, was to go myself to the home of the Arab horse and there learn of him from his master, the Bedouin. In 1893, before there was even an Arabian Horse Registry, Homer Davenport saw his first real Arabian horses at the Chicago World's Fair. In 1906, Homer realized his boyhood dream of traveling to the desert and buying Arabians directly from the Bedouin horse breeding tribes. The Davenport importation provided one of the foundation bloodlines of American Arabian horse breeding. It is the privilege of the Davenport Arabian Horse Conservancy to salute the Davenport Arabian Horse and the people devoted to it by keeping this classic of Arabian horse literature in print so that future generations of Arabian horse enthusiasts can enjoy Davenport's information, presented in his individual and humorous style. Homer Calvin Davenport was born on March 8, 1867 at Silverton, Marion County, Oregon, United States; the son of Timothy Woodbridge Davenport, a politically minded farmer, and his wife Florinda Geer, daughter of R. C. Geer of Waldo Hills, Oregon, United States. Homer’s mother died when he was but three and a half years old. The farm home was the scene of his early childhood.
In 1889, Davenport attended the Mark Hopkins School of Art in San Francisco, California, where he was expelled after a month because of his cartooning; he returned to the school for a brief time in 1892.
After various unsuccessful attempts to enter the business world, Davenport finally obtained a position on the Portland Oregonian and, in 1892, on the San Francisco Examiner.
In 1895, after three very successful years on the latter paper, he was brought by William Randolph Hearst to New York where his cartoons for the New York Evening Journal won for him an international reputation and caused him to become one of the highest-salaried men in the profession.
As a cartoonist for the Journal he greatly influenced public opinion during the free-silver campaign of 1896, the Spanish-American War, and the second McKinley campaign of 1900.
With the New York Evening Mail during the Roosevelt campaign of 1904, Davenport drew the noted “He’s Good Enough for Me” cartoon, of which millions of copies were printed. His work was responsible for the attempt to pass an anti-cartoon bill in the New York legislature.
Certain of his creations, notably Mark Hanna’s dollar-marked suit of clothes and the Trust figure—brutal, unintelligent, lawless, relentless —have been accepted as permanent contributions to the symbolism of his craft. His Uncle Sam also was one of the best conceived by any cartoonist. His first work of wide significance was the creation of C. P. Huntington as a comic character.
He excelled as an advocate of municipal reform and is said to have done for San Francisco what Thomas Nast did for New York during the Tweed scandal.
His picture, “The Boss” (Sam Rainey), duplicated the success of Nast’s famous “What Are You Going To Do About It?”
When Admiral Dewey was being criticized for presenting to his wife the house given him hy admiring friends, Davenport’s cartoon depiciting his victory in Manila Bay and bearing the significant caption “Lest We Forget, ” brought about a change of public sentiment which earned for Davenport the Admiral’s lasting gratitude.
Davenport attended the Dreyfus trial, making studies of the principal characters connected with it. He also caricatured prominent English statesmen.
Returning to the Iiearst press, he joined the staff of the New York American, occasionally lecturing on the influence and work of the cartoonist.
In 1898 he published Cartoons, with an introduction by John J. Ingalls.
Other published works include: The Bell of Silver ton (1899); Other Stories of Oregon (1900); The Dollar or the Man? (1900); My Quest of the Arab Horse (1909); The Country Boy (1910).

On September 7, 1893 Davenport married in Chicago, Daisy, daughter of Robert A. Moore of San Francisco.
