Groninger, Homer M. was born on July 24, 1884 in Port Royal, Pennsylvania, United States. Son of R. Elliott and Mary (McLaughlin) Groninger.


Student Airyview Academy, Port Royal, Pennsylvania, 1901-1902, Pennsylvania State College, 1903-1904. Bachelor of Science, United States Military Academy, 1908. Student School of Musketry, Monterey, California, 1912, Command and General staff schedul, 1918-1921 (distinguished graduate 1923), Cavalry School, 1922, Army War College, 1926.


Commissioned Second lieutenant, 1908. Promoted through grades to major general, August 2, 1942. Served in Punitive Expedition, Mexico, 1916-1917, 2d and 3d Division, Meuse Argonne, 1918, in Germany, 1918-1919.
