KING, Hon. Annette Faye was born on September 13, 1947 in Murchison.


Murchison District High School. Naimea College, graduated a dental nurse, 1967, post graduate diploma, advanced dentistry, 1981. Waikato University, Bachelor of Arts degree, political science and history, 1981.


Joined Labour party, 1972. Branch secretary and chairperson. LEC secretary; delegate to annual and regional conferences.

Vice-President, State Dental Nurse’s Institute, 1981-1984. Member, central committee of the Public Service Association, (dental nurse’s occupational group), 1983-1984. Elected to parliament for Horowhenna, 198487.

Chairperson: Parliamentary Select Committee on Social Services. A sub-Committee on Social Welfare. Re-elected to Parliament since 1987.

Member: House Select Committee. Caucus Committee on Women, Social Services and Community Affairs. Minister of Employment, Minister of Immigration and Minister of Youth Affairs, 1989-1990.

Under-Secretary for Social Welfare, Employment and Youth Affairs. Helped establish the Social Welfare District Executive Committees. Representative for the Minister on the Social Welfare Commission.

Considerable involvement with the following institutions: Rehabilitation League Review, Social Welfare organisations. Regional Employment and Access Councils, Community Resource Centre Association, Enterprise Agencies, community based Employment Network and the Student Job Search Organisation. Chairperson, working party to establish the Local Employment and Enterprise Development Programme.

Member, Tourism 2000 Task Force Committee. Professional career: school dental nurse, 1965-1970 and 1973-1982. Dental tutor, 1982-1984.
