WILDE, Hon. Fran was born in 1948 in Wellington, New Zealand.


St Mary’s College; Wellington Polytechnic, Bachelor of Arts, political science. Victoria University of Wellington, diploma of journalism.


Parliamentary researcher. Legislative department. Joined Labour Party, 1972.

Held numerous posts including electorate chairperson and executive member of Labour Party’s regional council. Former editor, Labour Party newspaper. Elected to Parliament for Wellington Central, 1981.

Member: Select Committee on Commerce and Energy. Select Committee on Official Information. Parliamentary Opposition Spokesperson on State Services.

Re-elected to Parliament, 1984-1987. Government Whip, 1984-1987. Chairperson, Government Administration Select Committee, 198487.

Member, Standing Orders Select Committee. Successfully sponsored two private mems. bills. Homosexual Law Reform Bill and Adult Adoption Information Bill.

Reelected to Parliament, since 1987. Associate Minister of Foreign Affairs, 1987-1990. Associate Minister of Conservation, 1987.

Minister for Disarmament, 198890. Associate Minister of External Relations and Trade, 1988-1990. Minister of Tourism, 1989-1990.

Convener of the Wellington Regional MPs Lobby. Professional career: newspaper and radio journalist. Operated her own publicity and public relations business.

Member, Council of Victoria University of Wellington.
