Hong-Yee Chiu was born on October 4, 1932 in Shanghai, China; the son of Hanping and Min-non (Young) Chiu. He came to the United States in 1955.

Hong-Yee Chiu was born on October 4, 1932 in Shanghai, China; the son of Hanping and Min-non (Young) Chiu. He came to the United States in 1955.
Chiu graduated from National Taiwan University and in 1959 received his Doctor of Philosophy in Astrophysics from Cornell University.
After graduation, he was a member at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. He served as a Space Astrophysics Scientist for NASA for over 35 years. He was also the first scientist to officially use the term "quasar," in 1964.
After his retirement from NASA, Chiu started the EHanism Group and developed an EHGBooks micropublishing app with some notable Chinese computer scientists in order to promote Chinese culture and Sinology memory. Later on, Chiu led the EHanism Group to develop the first Amazon Micropublishing Chinese Solution in 2012. Chiu is the host of the 2013 Taiwan Reunion Program for NTU Early Graduates in commemoration of the 85th anniversary of National Taiwan University.
Hong-Yee Chiu is a member of American Physical Society, American Astronomical Society, Explorers Club and Cosmos Club.

Hong-Yee Chiu married Bella Chao on June 18, 1962. He married second time Celia C.H. Chen on July 2, 1966.
On July 3, 1991, Chiu married Nana Tung-Ai Chiang. Hong-Yee has three children - Lihn, Tien-Seng and Tien-Yee.
