Background
Hong Ying was born on September 21, 1962, in Chongqing, an extremely poor part of China. There was a terrible famine in China from 1959 to 1962. Her family of eight shared two small rooms, scavenged for food, and lived among open sewers along the Yangtze River in Chongqing. Ying’s eighteenth year was pivotal. It was around her eighteenth birthday that her mother confirmed her persistent suspicions and feelings as a family outcast. Ying learned that her biological father was different than that of her siblings.
