Taught at elementary schools; later became a member of NAPF (Nippon Ai.tist Proletarian Federation) and took an active part in proletarian literature movement; wrote historical novels. Works include “Shiroi Kabe”(The White Wall); “Ishi- Kari-gawa” (The River Ishikari).
HONMA Hisao 本間久雄(1886-). Scholar of English literature. Litt. D. Born in Yamagata Prefecture, he graduated from the Literature Department, Waseda University (1909). Became editor-in-chief of the Waseda Bungaku, a literary periodical issued by his alma mater. After studying in Britain (1928) he became a professor of English literature at Waseda University (1931). Well-known a3 an expert on Oscar Wilde. Received his doctorate (1936). Wrote books of literary criticism.
HONMA Hyakuri 本間百里(1776-1850). Scholar of classic Japanese literature. Physician of Lord Yoshida in Iyo Province (Ehime Prefecture). Residing in Edo, he was well versed in ancient Japanese phonetics and prosody and ancient Cou practices and wrote many books on those subjects.
HONMA Junji 本間順治(1904-). Student of Japanese swords. Known also as Kunzan. Doctor of Literature. Born in Yamagata Prefecture. Graduated from the Japanese Literature Section of the Kokugakuin University (1928). Served as chief of the Research Section of the National Museum, appointed chief of the Fine and Industrial Arts Section of the Cultural Property Protection Commission. Concurrently, managing director of the Art Object Japanese Sword Conservation Association. Author of “Big Swords and New Swords,’’ “Chart of National Treasure Swords” and “The Japanese novels. Works include “Shiroi Kabe”(The White Wall); “Ishi- Kari-gawa” (The River Ishikari).
