Interested also in psychology and literature, Delgado’s central philosophical contention is that •here is an objective but non-temporal realm of values by which we can shape our lives, and this assertion is grounded on a phenomenology of time-consciousness which shows a debt to Jaspers and Blondel. Experience of the realm of values is relatively familiar: when, for example, we understand the meaning of Socrates' words or appreciate the value of his attitudes; or when we apprehend a link of purposiveness between the living things and the cosmos; or when solitary contemplation reveals the mystery around us; or when we are penetrated by the impact of a definitive separation, such moments do not belong solely to the realm of the temporal. They are atoms of eternity, which is not present only in privileged moments but is an element in our whole existence. Human beings alone can rise above the temporal and ephemeral life of the satisfaction of immediate desire and can act by reference to these nontemporal values. Delgado was also alive to issues in ecology which became well-known some quarter-century after he wrote about them. His ecological views are not independent of his value theory: in the fantastic richness of nature, he saw a hint of purpose.
