Horace F. Burr was born in 1844 in Maine, New York, United States.
At the start of the Civil War enlisted in a Massachusetts Regiment, serving for the duration of hostilities. Upon his return to Boston Mr. Burr began the study of architecture under the late N. J. Bradlee, and after a period of additional training, opened his own office in the city. In the early years of his practice he built a number of mercantile houses (destroyed in the great fire of 1872), and after a decade (1882-92) when he was a member of Peabody & Stearns’ office, he established a partnership with the late Lyman Size. They were architects for the original building of the Houghton & Dutton Department Store on Tremont Street, and in later years Mr. Burr independently designed a number of buildings in Boston.
