He was educated at Rossall School and Trinity College, Cambridge, and ordained in 1886.

In 1905 he became Bishop in Fukien, serving until 1918. Returning to England he was Archdeacon of Ely and a Canon Residentiary at the cathedral until his death on 21 November 1941.
